But as for activism, my parents did what they could,
given the constraints, but were never involved in the
causes I think of when I think of activists.

and with reason, but now we have to ask how can we broaden the view.
- Paul Farmer

seen its heights but because I've seen its depths.
- Paul Farmer

- Paul Farmer

It is clear that the pharmaceutical industry is not,
by any stretch of the imagination, doing enough to
ensure that the poor have access to adequate medical care.
- Paul Farmer

I'm not an austere person.
- Paul Farmer

For me, an area of moral clarity is:
you're in front of someone who's suffering and you
have the tools at your disposal to alleviate that suffering or even eradicate it,
and you act.
- Paul Farmer

I think we will see better vaccines within the next 15 years,
but I'm not a scientist and am focused on the short-term -
what will happen in the interim.
- Paul Farmer

At the same time, it is obvious that clinicians in
Haiti are faced with different,
and, in fact, greater, challenges when attempting to
treat complications of HIV disease.
- Paul Farmer

The only way to do the human rights thing is to do
the right thing medically.
- Paul Farmer

Anywhere you have extreme poverty and no national health insurance,
no promise of health care regardless of social standing,
that's where you see the sharp limitations of market-based health care.
- Paul Farmer

Since I do not believe that there should be different
recommendations for people living in the Bronx and
people living in Manhattan,
I am uncomfortable making different recommendations
for my patients in Boston and in Haiti.
- Paul Farmer

I've been impressed, over the last 15 years,
with how often the somewhat conspiratorial comments
of Haitian villagers have been proven to be correct
when the historical record is probed carefully.
- Paul Farmer

I recommend the same therapies for all humans with HIV.
There is no reason to believe that physiologic responses
to therapy will vary across lines of class,
culture, race or nationality.
- Paul Farmer

The poorest parts of the world are by and large the
places in which one can best view the worst of medicine
and not because doctors in these countries have different
ideas about what constitutes modern medicine.
It's the system and its limitations that are to blame.
- Paul Farmer

In fact, it seems to me that making strategic alliances
across national borders in order to treat HIV among
the world's poor is one of the last great hopes of
solidarity across a widening divide.
- Paul Farmer

We've taken on the major health problems of the poorest -
tuberculosis,
maternal mortality, AIDS, malaria - in four countries.
We've scored some victories in the sense that we've
cured or treated thousands and changed the discourse about what is possible.
- Paul Farmer

But if you're asking my opinion, I would argue that
a social justice approach should be central to medicine
and utilized to be central to public health.
This could be very simple: the well should take care of the sick.
- Paul Farmer

Courage doesn't always roar.
Sometimes courage is the quiet voice
at the end of the day, saying,
"I will try again tomorrow."
- Mary Anne Radmacher

Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again,
but expecting different results.
- Rita Mae Brown, also attributed to Einstein

Choose Inner Peace.
Nothing is worth losing your inner peace.
Take action as circumstances require,

Stop. Breathe deeply.
Close your eyes and breathe deeply again.
Then, and only then, take action -
from a peaceful heart.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie

From the actions stems the dream again;

I expect to pass through this world but once.
Any good therefore that I can do,

let me do it now.
Let me not defer or neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.
- William Penn

Don't be too timid and squeamish about your actions.
All life is an experiment.
The more experiments you make the better.

In each game, one team succeeds and one fails.
Then the next week they both get out and play again.
Life is also a game - with some successes and some failures.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Never cease loving a person, and never give up hope for him,
for even the prodigal son who had fallen most low,
could still be saved; the bitterest enemy
and also he who was your friend could again be your friend;
love that has grown cold can kindle
- Soren Kierkegaard

If something is important to you,
attend to it immediately, and regularly.
If something is not really important to you,
that's great also -
just scratch it off your to-do list forever,
and never worry about it again.
Choose how you invest your time, and honor your choices.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Can you achieve your goals?
You can't reach your goal if you haven't
defined your goals.
And you can't succeed if you don't try -
and then pick yourself up
and try again each time you fail.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Love bravely, live bravely, be courageous;
there's really nothing to lose.
There's no wrong you can't make right again,
so be kinder to yourself;
have fun, take chances. There are no bounds.
- Jewel

It's one of life's great paradoxes ...
Accepting with gratitude whatever life throws at us
is critical to happiness.
Yet without a goal and commitment, life lose much of its value.
The best we can do in the face of this paradox
is to play to win, but be cheerful in defeat
and ready to play again.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie

If you have an important point to make,
don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver.
Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again.
Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack.
- Winston Churchill

Could we see when and where we are to meet again,
we would be more tender when we bid our friends goodbye.
- Ouida

May the road rise up to meet you,
may the wind be ever at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face
and the rain fall softly on your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.
- Irish Blessing

Beginning today, treat everyone you meet
as if they were going to be dead by midnight.
Extend to them all the care,
kindness and understanding you can muster,
and do with no thought of any reward.
Your life will never be the same again.
- Og Mandino

If you stand up and be counted,
from time to time you may get yourself knocked down.
But remember this: A man flattened by an opponent can get up again.
A man flattened by conformity stays down for good.
- Thomas J. Watson

You can learn how to let go of the past.
Whether you have experienced a break up
with someone you cared for deeply,
whether death has taken a loved one,
whether you have had a feud with a friend or family member,
whether you have lost a job.
Move on and let go.
Life can be joyful and rewarding again.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie

I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;

That it can follow the flight of song -
The song from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.

again and again before we reach
the mountaintop of our desires.

A good-bye is never painful unless
you're never going to say hello again.
- Anonymous

Real love is never a selfish emotion.
If you want something from someone -
especially if that something is sex -
what you are feeling is not true love.
True love is about wanting happiness for the person you love -
and not about seeking happiness for yourself.
Fortunately, in most cases our own loving presence
is the greatest gift we can give to a person we love.
Nonetheless, the litmus test of love is knowing
we would choose never to see that person again
if we believed that distance would bring them greater happiness.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Zen says that if you drop knowledge -
and within knowledge everything is included;
your name, your identity, everything,
because this has been given to you by others -
if you drop all that has been given by others,
you will have a totally different quality to your being: innocence.
This will be a crucifixion of the persona, the personality,
and there will be a resurrection of your innocence.
You will become a child again, reborn.
- Osho

As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth,
so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind.
To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again.
To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over
the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.
- Henry David Thoreau

Did you ever stop to think, and forget to start again?

Mind is repetitive, mind always moves in circles.
Mind is a mechanism: you feed it with knowledge,
it repeats the same knowledge,
it goes on chewing the same knowledge again and again.
No-mind is clarity, purity, innocence.
No-mind is the real way to live,
the real way to know, the real way to be.

I will greet this day with love in my heart.
And how will I do this?
Henceforth will I look on all things with love and be born again.
I will love the sun for it warms my bones;
yet I will love the rain for it cleanses my spirit.
I will love the light for it shows me the way;
yet I will love the darkness for it shows me the stars.
I will welcome happiness as it enlarges my heart;
yet I will endure sadness for it opens my soul.
I will acknowledge rewards for they are my due;
yet I will welcome obstacles for they are my challenge.
- Og Mandino

I love the rain - it washes memories
off the sidewalk of life.
